Sports Massage & Remedial Therapy

A sports massage is not just for the ‘sporty’, it’s a great way to take time out of busy lives and relax. Spending time to take care of your body can relieve the tension and stresses of everyday life.
If you are currently training or starting up a new activity, sports massage is an excellent measure of injury prevention and maintenance, minor problems and ‘niggles’ can be located and treated before they have a chance to develop into any major problems. If you are suffering from an injury sports massage can play a vital part in your recovery.

A note from the therapist.

‘I’m a fully qualified sports massage therapist trained by the London School of Sports Massage. I’m also member of the Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage (ISRM) this ensures that as therapists, we are kept up to date with new techniques to provide the best treatment we can.

I’m also trained in taping and strapping techniques, which I can apply in conjunction with treatments if beneficial.

Mel Rabjohns.

What is Sports Massage?
Sports Massage Is manipulation of the soft tissues to treat injuries with the knowledge of how they work, how they heal, and what can be done to speed up the recovery.
Manipulation of muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia can help restore function and mobility in areas that have adhesions and scar tissue from a trauma. But also areas congested by tension, posture and stresses of everyday life.
Other benefits include helping to relieve excessive muscle tension, improve flexibility, boost circulation and promote healing.

What to expect
Treatments last an hour, however on your first treatment there will be an initial consultation which may take you over the hour, allow 10-15 minutes over.

The consultation will involve history to be taken about any past or recent injuries and a few medical history questions will be asked, as some conditions are contraindicated to massage, and massage may not be the best course of treatment.
For assessment sometimes it is necessary to undress to underwear to look for imbalances in muscles ,and particular movement patterns. So if you would feel more comfortable, bring a pair of shorts with you to the treatment.

massage1To achieve the best results many techniques are used together, some areas need to be stretched, so prepare to be moved around. You may also be asked to perform particular movements to help locate areas of pain and restriction.  Deep tissue techniques can be uncomfortable, so they will be explained beforehand to ensure you are as relaxed as possible, and you get the most out of your treatment.

Hi Mel, just a quick note to say thanks again. As a keen amateur racing cyclist I've really appreciated the treatment which has reduced the leg muscle soreness to nearly nothing and that has helped me train harder with better recovery so I can compete with those pesky Elites and 1st cats in the British Cycling Hillingdon Winter Series.

I find Mel an outstanding sports masseur.  As a competitive cyclist for many years and now as a corrective exercise specialist I have a wide experience of different styles of massage and masseurs.  What Mel brings to the table is a special blend of skill, natural touch and a calming, confident energy that will leave you feeling relaxed and revitalised.  I am very confident in referring my clients to Mel in the knowledge that her integrity and personal and technical skills will provide them with just what they need.  I also use Mel for massage myself for recovery from training and to keep my body balanced.

When I read sports I did not think this would work for me as I am far from the sports type of person but I have a lot of issues with my knees and needed to lose a few stone so  after a number of sessions with my Sports therapist I was a lot better and was able to do exercise that alowed me to lose the weight and have a normal life..
